Surrogacy Scam: Two Women Arrested for Running an Illegal Egg Donation Operation

Ramol Police Arrest Two Female Brokers in an Egg Donation Fraud Scheme

In an alarming case of surrogacy scam and illegal egg donation, Ramol police in Ahmedabad have detained two women, Vanita Patel and Kushboo Patel, for orchestrating an unlawful egg donation operation. The duo stands accused of duping women with false promises of monetary compensation for donating their eggs, carried out by an unqualified doctor.

Overview of the Case

The investigation unveiled that Vanita Patel and Kushboo Patel persuaded approximately 30-35 women to participate in the illegal egg donation process. According to Himkar Singh, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) for Zone 5, the women were promised ₹15,000 in exchange for their eggs. However, the procedures were performed by Piyush Patel, a homeopathic doctor with no credentials for such medical tasks. This highlights a disturbing example of egg donation fraud in an already controversial surrogacy market.

Financial Exploitation Details

  • Vanita Patel: Earned ₹1,000 per donor recruited.
  • Kushboo Patel: Received ₹500 per recruited donor.

The women were deceived into believing this was a legitimate operation. Instead, they were subjected to dangerous medical practices, which included injections and procedures performed by an unqualified individual.

Tragic Outcome: Loss of Life in the Illegal Egg Donation Scheme

The case took a tragic turn when one of the victims, Sonal Parmar, passed away due to kidney failure in October 2017. Lured by the promise of ₹15,000, Sonal was subjected to risky procedures across Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, and Rajasthan. Piyush Patel, who performed these procedures, lacked the required qualifications for invasive medical practices.

Sonal’s death prompted her brother to file a formal complaint, which set the investigation into motion. A review by the medical board confirmed that Piyush Patel was not certified to administer injections or carry out egg extractions, underscoring the rampant risks of illegal egg donation practices.

Investigation Findings and Legal Action

The investigation has uncovered critical information:

  1. Unqualified Practices: Piyush Patel had no authority to perform any medical procedures.
  2. Documentation Evidence: Records at Piyush Patel’s clinic listed egg donors and recipients involved.
  3. Expanded Investigations: A team is examining the qualifications of other doctors potentially implicated.

Authorities are also interrogating Dr. Nisarg Patel, an allopathic practitioner, to determine his involvement in the surrogacy scam. The aim is to establish accountability and uncover the extent of complicity among medical professionals in this illegal operation.

Conclusion: Safeguarding Women in Assisted Reproduction

This surrogacy scam and illegal egg donation racket expose the vulnerabilities women face in an unregulated assisted reproduction sector. Arrests in surrogacy and egg donation fraud cases like this highlight the urgent need for stricter legal oversight to prevent exploitation and protect women from unsafe medical practices.
